Math at CMS

Overview

The California Common Core Standards (CCSS) were adopted in August of 2010. PVSD began implementing this new set of standards in 2014-15. The transition to a CCSS aligned program, along with our community beliefs about teaching and learning, are outlined in our 2013-2018 Strategic Plan.  The staff in Portola Valley School District have worked overtime to understand the standards and the impact of the standards on teaching and learning in Portola Valley. We are always continuing to create a robust math program.

Why

The graphic below shows a high level overview of key mathematical shifts in CCSS in relation to traditional math instruction.

In 2015-16 the district worked with teachers to adopt a new core program and supplemental materials that focus on rigor, differentiation, and deeper learning that help us to address the diverse learning needs of our school community.

Core Instructional Materials Adoption Process

 4-5 Program - 2016-2022

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt's Math Expressions Common Core was adopted by the Board of Trustees in 2016. This curriculum offers a wide variety of features for all types of learners and is balanced through adaptive digital access and traditional workbooks. Review the Math presentation given to parents about the program.

6-8 Program 2016-2023

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt's Big Idea's was adopted by the Board of Trustees in 2015. This curriculum offers a pathway-based program that groups students by ability. The program provides enriching activities and deeper core instruction. Must of the work is done using Big Ideas Online and is support by the traditional textbook.

The district does believe that this core curriculum is just one resource that can support math instruction. All teachers to use a variety of other supplemental resources to strengthen a diverse and rigorous math program.

Supplemental Curriculum

The following resources help to supplement the core program and may be used throughout student's math experience at Corte Madera. These resources can also used at home.
